The ferrari of shirts: Equipment

Many of view asked me where the shirt I was wearing in my video yesterday was from, so today I thought I would dedicate this post to an absolute wardrobe essential: the Equipment shirt. I actually wrote about the Equipment shirt in my September Get The Gloss column, that was all about those key transitional pieces and early season investments:

"Another essential to ease you into autumn is the forever chicness of a silk shirt, and when you are talking silk shirts there is only one place to go to: Equipment. I don’t quite know what it is about the Equipment fit, but it looks great on virtually anyone, of any age or size. If you are investing for the first time I would go with a classic black or white with contrasting piping, but if you already have one in these colours think about a pale blue (looks great with your September tan) or even a printed one. In fall, wear tucked in your high waist jeans or hang loose over leather leggings. In winter layer under a boyish cashmere V neck sweater or a fur gilet. It’s a pricey buy, but cost per wear it’s a great investment."

Today I am wearing a grey striped one but if I could I would have one in every colour!

"Inspired by Katherine Hepburn and Lauren Bacall, Christian Restoin's 1975 collection introduced men's shirts to womenswear. Current/Elliott's Serge Azria relaunched the brand in 2010 with a collection of boy/girl styles in luxurious silks, infusing the label's heritage with contemporary edge."

I would really love an equipment shirt but they are dry clean only.
So... Cost per wear - are they really such a great buy? When factoring in dry cleaning costs after each wear and having to travel to and from the cleaners all the time? Do you ever hand wash yours?

What an outfit. Your styling is so chic and effortless. Wish I could pull off a shirt as good as you xx :o)

What if I wore it the first Time said...

I know they say dry clean but I wash mine in a silk friendly detergent like woolite and put them in the machine on a cold wool cycle and I'm certain that there is no harm done.

I haven't washed it yet so thank you for the heads up! I think I will probably was in super cold water, in and out with the smallest amount of hand wash detergent. Then hang dry. fingers crossed!

Hhhm thanks everyone for the comments. Laura - fingers crossed when you wash it for the first time eek! And now, knowing that they seem ok to hand wash carefully, I think I am tempted again to look at Equipment shirts :-)

I hand wash mine, then disaster struck the black spots bleed into the white background! I then had it dry cleaned which thankfully sorted the problem out!
Very hard to wear, especially with two little ones! Dry clean all the way, if it's patterened like mine!
I'm writing this with it on, as I love it so! But it's now covered in my sons pasta! Off I go again. :(
